A mixture of herbs whose original formula included burdock root, Indian rhubarb root, slippery elm inner bark and sheep sorrel, Essiac tea can now be found in several combinations of the main herbs and watercress, red clover, blessed thistle, kelp, etc. The mixture was discovered by a Canadian nurse (Rene Caisse) whose name (read backwards) gave the name of the tea.

Essiac tea is known to relieve pain, strengthen the immune system and reduce the size of tumors, which brings a lot of hope in treating patients suffering from cancer. Trials have shown that this tea can gradually soften and shrink tumors, in the end helping the body to discharge them.

Among other benefits that practitioners and consumers have noticed, cleansing the blood and detoxifying the body are obvious. This tea can also promote cell repair, relieve inflammation, lubricate joints and restore the normal energy levels. Moreover, Essiac tea is known to stimulate the stomach and eliminate excess mucous in different organs, tissues, lymph glands and even nerve channels.

Since the Essiac tea may be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, there is more than one method and dosage to prepare the tea as well as different types of water (the best to use it spring water or non-fluoridated water) recommended for the purpose. It is also advisable that you refrigerate it after brewing. This tea should be drunk on an empty stomach, two hours before (or after) meals. In order to get the right recipe you had better ask for directions from a knowledgeable practitioner.
