Horsetail herb tea has served for centuries as a remedy used to stop bleeding, repair broken bones, relieve arthritis and other rheumatic conditions as well as to increase urine production and treat kidney stones. It is still acclaimed for its numerous therapeutic effects by many contemporary herbalists.

The high concentration of silicic acid and other silicates that the horsetail herb contains is known to strengthen the connective tissues (such as tendons and ligaments) and promote cartilage and bone formation, speeding up the rate of tissue repair and promoting strength and elasticity in the newly formed tissues. It thus constitutes a good remedy for arthritis, osteoporosis, brittle nails and other related conditions.

Initially used to stop wound bleeding, the horsetail herb has proved to be an excellent clotting inducer, keeping excessive nosebleeds under control and reducing the coughing up of blood in a wide range of respiratory and pulmonary diseases.

The mild diuretic action of the horsetail herbal tea helps flush out the bladder, soothing the urinary tract and relieving any inherent bladder pressure. This ability to remove excess water from the body makes it useful for flushing several urinary bacterial infections.

Horsetail herb has also proved efficient in treating stomach and skin ulcers, wounds and several skin inflammations. A decoction prepared by simmering the herb for about three hours can also be used as mouthwash, diluted down with water, to treat mouth ulcers, gum infections and throat inflammations. Skin ulcers, topical wounds and sores can be treated with a horsetail herb poultice.
